Bone and Body Composition Adaptions to Training (BoBCAT) Study

What is the study?

The NMRL’s Bone and Body Composition Adaptations to Training (BoBCAT) research study’s primary purpose of this study is to determine the bone density, structure and strength adaptations that result from various exercise programs. We will measure these bone adaptations with state-of-the-science imaging technology. We also want to find other ways the human body changes in response to exercise. We will look at things like changes in hormone levels, body composition and physical performance.

What does my participation help with?

This study is Department of Defense (DoD) funded. Findings from the study will enhance and educate the military services and training their personnel.

Who can participate?

The NMRL is looking for participants who are:

· Moderately physically active for at least 30 minutes a day

· Between the ages of 18-40

· Willing to commit to a 6-month trial

· Willing to travel to the study site in the South Side of Pittsburgh, PA

This may consist of visits to the study site up to 3 times a week for 60-90 minute physical training sessions.

When does the study start?

The next iteration of the study will begin in early September 2023.

How is the study conducted?

All interested participants will need to be screened before getting started. This is a short phone call with Kelly Mroz to review a brief list of questions that can qualify or disqualify you from the study.

Once the iteration begins in September, participants will attend approximately 7 study visits over a 6-month intervention period consisting of various testing procedures including body scans, blood draws, questionnaires and exercise performance tests.

As noted, participants may be required to attend three 60 to 90-minute training sessions per week for 24 weeks. All training sessions will be monitored by a National Strength and Conditioning Association Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), or personnel who are trained and monitored by the CSCS coach. They will provide instant feedback to continually improve form and motivate participants through the workouts.

All participants have the opportunity to be compensated up to $1,000 for completing the full 6-month study. If you are interested in participating and beginning the screening process, please contact:
